Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is increasingly aligning its growth strategy with the circular economy model, which combines economic benefits and sustainability principles. Central to DEWA's objectives is to become a global front-runner in sustainable innovation to reach Net Zero by 2050.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability, referencing directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He stated, "DEWA ardently supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and aims to achieve 100% clean energy by 2050. In 2022, we reduced Dubai's net carbon emissions by 19% compared to 2010."

He elaborated on DEWA's circular economy strategy, which provides a holistic framework, accentuating international best practices.

In its quest for greener operations, DEWA has introduced various initiatives. These include optimizing grid efficiency, reducing emissions, and promoting recycling, contributing to their ambitious carbon reduction targets. Their efforts led to a 37.78% increase in electricity and water production efficiency in 2022, as compared to 2006, equivalent to a reduction of 82 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Fundamental principles guiding DEWA's Circular Economy Strategy include Circular Design, Asset Management, Renewable Energy, and fostering Circular Partnerships. This strategy envelops the entire value chain, emphasizing user engagement and sustainable procurement.

As the UAE celebrates the Year of Sustainability, and with the upcoming 28th UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, DEWA is amplifying its efforts, promoting the circular economy model across divisions and encouraging community involvement.

DEWA remains engaged in global sustainability events, like the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) and the Dubai Solar Show. The 25th WETEX will be held from 15-17 November 2023 and is expected to be a significant event in the global sustainability calendar.

DEWA's commitment to sustainability is also evident in its internal operations. It has been a forerunner in green building initiatives in Dubai. Notably, in 2019, Dubai received the platinum LEED rating, with DEWA significantly contributing to this achievement.

Furthermore, DEWA's green data center at Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has been recognized as the world's largest solar-powered data center by Guinness World Records.

A significant component of DEWA's strategy is energy efficiency. Various projects, like retrofitting buildings and installing photovoltaic panels, have led to substantial power and water savings.

In a notable digital transformation, by March 2021, DEWA accomplished 100% paperless operations, aligning with Smart Dubai's objectives. Moreover, they have integrated green charger stations and incorporated electric vehicles into their fleet.

One innovative sustainability initiative by DEWA is the introduction of intelligent recycling machines for employees, incentivizing plastic and aluminum disposal. Since their installation in October 2022, around 300,000 items have been recycled.

Additionally, DEWA participates in environmental campaigns. For World Environment Day 2023, they collaborated with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group for beach clean-ups and mangrove planting.
